The Arts, a Global Community
The Arts world is a dynamic global community and as such, is vital to the ways in which we experience and understand the world at Global-Ed Immersion LLC (GEI). No language skill is necessary for appreciating and experiencing art; for learning how to talk about what is seen, heard, and felt because art transcends barriers of every kind, ignites emotion, and creates authentic spaces for communicating and building rapport. This summer, we attended several arts events and deepened our connections in the world of arts, international business, and socially-conscious philanthropy.
Photographer Frank Stewart — Dr. Modeste — Pianist Aaron Diehl
The Phillips Collection in Washington DC featured the work of famed photographer Frank Stewart in a first-ever retrospective of his career that spans decades. “Frank Stewart's Nexus” on display until September 3rd, showcases the artist’s excursions to Mali, Cuba, Sierra Leone, and the US cities of New Orleans, and Kansas City (to name a few) in addition to several pieces from his globetrotting as tenure as Senior Photographer for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra headed by Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. The signature events centered on Stewart’s work included two conversations; one musical, a collaboration with Pianist Aaron Diehl, the other academic with collaborators Professor (emeritus) Hortense Spillers of Vanderbilt University and NYU’s Professor Fred Moten. Enriching, engaging evenings with content curated for the substantive exploration and edification of the subject matter and absorption by audience members. At GEI, we understand the power of networks and knowing beyond the confines of university classrooms; being a globally culturally competent citizen of the world requires far more than academic degrees.
Providing students with experiences that complement and enhance what they learn in classrooms and on campus is an important part of our work at GEI.
